Southside Pharmacy Nutrition Services program provides Home Parental Nutrition and Enteral Nutrition (tube feeding) services to Southside Pharmacy patients every day. We are committed to the highest quality nutritional assistance.

Nutritional support is critically important to achieving optimum patient outcomes.

Optimum nutrition can bolster immune status, prevent complications and hospitalizations and enhance patient responses to other therapies. It can also greatly improve quality of life. Our goal is to provide the most appropriate and effective nutrition support and therapy.

Assuring optimal nutrition therapy requires specialized knowledge and expertise of a multidisciplinary care team in determining the patient's nutritional status, nutrient needs, and the best method of providing nutritional support. Southside's Nutritional Support Team (Home NST) are specially trained in the complexities of appropriate nutritional needs, guidelines, monitoring and management. They work with physicians, hospitals, discharge planners, and case managers in assuring that their patients receive the best nutritional care.

We offer the team's services to all patients who require nutritional assessment support.

When Is Nutritional Therapy Needed?

Candidates for Enteral Nutrition (tube feeding) Therapy include :

» A normally functioning lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract, so nutrients can be adequately absorbed.

» An inability or unwillingness to swallow.

» A gastric obstruction

» An inability to ingest adequate amounts of food and fluids by mouth.

Candidates for Total Parental Nutrition (TPN) include:

» An inability to tolerate enteral nutritional support

» Inadequate absorption of nutrients through the normal digestive process

In general, physicians will recommend TPN for the patient who cannot absorb adequate nutrients through the normal digestive process. There are many possible reasons why patients cannot absorb nutrient's including :

» Massive bowel resection (not enough intestine to allow for normal absorption of nutrients).

» Disease of the small intestine.

» Inflammation of the intestine due to radiation therapy for cancer treatments (Radiation enteritis).
